 Headingley Low Carbon Homes Club

First Meeting January 15th at Heart Centre, 7pm to 9pm

Why not start the new year with a resolve to take steps to reduce your energy bills and reduce the carbon footprint of your home?

This is not simple, but it is becoming increasingly more vital that we do just that. Heating our homes to a comfortable temperature, having enough hot water, and powering up lights and appliances can form up to a third of our overall carbon footprint, which is quite a sizeable chunk. Living in comfortable homes with access to power as required, is essential for our health and wellbeing, but sadly, for many people this is not a given.

Different communities across the city are now starting self-help Low Carbon Homes groups, to share knowledge, skills, ideas, to boost us on our different journeys to improve our homes, and this is what Zero Carbon Headingley group wish to do.

So come along to the first meeting on January 15th at Heart Centre, Heart, 7 til 9 pm, where Lucy Meredith , from People Powered Homes, will be giving a short talk about the different grants and financial support out there to support home improvements for retrofit to reduce energy use.

After the talk we will be holding a workshop discussion time, to get your ideas of what you would find helpful to support you on your ‘retrofit’ journey, and to get feedback on our ideas for the Low Carbon Homes group.

By retrofit I mean doing anything from basic draught proofing, and insulation, to full installation of renewable power sources, so it doesn’t matter if you live in a rented room, or own your house, as there are bound to be others facing similar issues as you with regards to reducing energy use and improving home comfort.

This is a free meeting, although small contributions for the room hire would be welcome.

If you cannot make the meeting but would like to stay in touch, please email zerocarbonheadingley@gmail.com to get on the low Carbon Homes group mailing list, as there will be further talks and visits.

ZCH short news items

Zero Carbon Headingley will be supporting the work of INFUZE, a multimillion-pound, five year project encouraging Leeds residents to imagine and co-design alternatives to car ownership. INFUZE will work with communities across Leeds and this will hopefully lead to a national centre of excellence in low carbon alternatives to car ownership. New technologies and a variety of shared transportation could  keep people mobile with far less energy and carbon than individually owned cars. You can keep up to date by contacting the INFUZE team at the University of Leeds Institute for Transport Studies and subscribing to their newsletter https://infuze.eo.page/s5y65

Zero Carbon Headingley will be involved in an event about INFUZE early in 2025.

Britain Talks Climate 2024

A major survey from Climate Outreach with lots of interesting data and findings – have a look here

Here are some highlights:

Most people want more options for walking, wheeling and cycling

Here’s
5 things we learnt about public opinion around active travel:

1. Most people travel actively every day or every other day
2. Investment in active travel is popular
3. Where we live shapes how actively we can travel
4. For more than a third of us, active travel is the most freeing travel option
5. But cars feel safer for many

There is a very positive story to tell when improving people’s options for walking, wheeling and cycling. Active travel can help make our country – and our planet – healthier. And it’s genuinely popular: most people are keen to have more options to travel more actively.

But there’s a crucial ‘watch-out’. Active travel needs to be safe, and feel safe, for more of us, more of the time. For people to feel able to embrace the wellbeing boost that active travel brings, it has to be a safe option and it has to feel like one.

Transforming your city centre: Woodhouse Lane Gateway
We have plans to improve how all road users get around the Woodhouse Lane Gateway, which connects the city centre to universities, Hyde Park and Woodhouse.
We have taken the public feedback results from the first round of consultation and created more detailed proposals.

View the proposals and have your say by Monday 16 December.
