ZERO CARBON HEADINGLEY are planning to start a

Headingley Low Carbon Homes Club

with the aims of getting people together who want to make improvements to their homes to reduce the energy use for heating, and electricity use, and to make their homes a better place to be. We thought that some of the following could be useful:

  • Open forum discussions on certain topics eg: DIY insulation projects
  • Visits to willing  hosts homes to look at a retrofit / or installation of panels for a Q & A on how well it works, how to go about it etc.
  • WhatsApp group to share information and tips, trades people used
  • -Shared E platform eg : google drive, to share factsheets or other sources of information.
  • organise talks from speakers about retrofit, house improvements / green energy and more

Are you interested in joining this Club?

We are pretty confident there is the interest out there for such a group, so we are at the point where we would like to launch the idea by holding a workshop to get feedback from local participants about ideas you might like to discuss and your ideas how such a club could work.

If you are interested, please reply to this email and we will put you on the invite list!

ZCH short news items

ZCH responded to the recent ..

West Yorkshire Combined Authority Local Transport Plan consultation. In summary we affirmed our support of their vision, including the aim that nobody in Leeds should need to own a car. But we noted a significant lack of ambition and urgency in the WYCA approach, one which does not match accelerating climate breakdown and the increased incidence of pollution, wildfires and floods around the world. Currently we are not on track to meet our local targets to cut emissions. An urgent priority is to step up engagement of local communities throughout West Yorkshire to tackle this emergency together.

Car Park (with EV charger points) garden behind Arndale Centre

‘We are currently working with the Arndale Centre (Headingley Central) management team who have invited us to help green up the back of the Centre with planting to soften the new car park and EV points. We hope to have more detail in the next newsletter.’

Yorkshire Rewilding Network – A new Hub at Heart

Dear Wilding Watchers,

We are still coming back down to earth after the wonderful Wilding event at Heart on 2nd October.

We are creating a North Leeds Hub to help increase the amount of rewilding happening and to give people the chance to take an active part in rewilding projects in their local area. We will do this through practical work days, informative workshops and by connecting you to others so you can support each other to facilitate a wilder Leeds.

We are currently looking for individuals to help us run the Hub so please let us know if you would like to learn more about what is involved.

The most common themes that came through from you in our Wilding workshop (and for us to focus on for the Hub) included: different ways of engaging young people and children; connecting with and educating existing groups; giving opportunities for resource exchange; spreading the word through visible urban rewilding projects (such as wilder front gardens) and practical ideas on how to get going.

 Wildest wishes
